For the first time this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers are on the road and the Las Vegas Raiders are home in a meeting between two old rivals trying to prove they’re worthy of being fringe contenders despite considerable flaws in 2023.

Unsurprisingly, it’s expected to be close, with the Raiders laying just 2.5 points Sunday night in Vegas. Here’s our take.

Why the Steelers will cover

That scary Pittsburgh defense generated four takeaways last week, and now they run into a Las Vegas offense that turned the ball over three times in a brutal loss to Buffalo. That’s a great recipe for Mike Tomlin’s squad, and this is a team that often finds a way.

They are 5-1 ATS in past six games and also 5-1 ATS past six on the road.

Why the Raiders will cover

One of the key members of that stacked Pittsburgh defense, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, is dealing with a chest injury and won’t be 100 percent if he plays at all. That’s exploitable for the Raiders, who arguably have too much offensive talent not to finally get it together in their home opener.

Historically, the Raiders cover against Pitt, going 9-3 ATS past 12 meetings.

That 2.5 is tricky, and I’d consider buying up to +3 for the Steelers. This one could absolutely go either way as we’re talking about two evenly matched teams overall, but I trust the Steelers more and they have a hell of a lot more momentum than Las Vegas right now.
