Left-handed quarterbacks are still a rare sight in the NFL.
Remember, football coaches, for the most part, are creatures of habit, and putting a southpaw under center means making changes for the offense, such as the protections changing for the right tackle to protect the quarterback's blind side. Some receivers don't like the ball spinning the opposite direction when it leaves the passer's hands. So lefties have not exactly been a plentiful sight among NFL quarterbacks in years past.
In fact, if you start naming the lefty quarterbacks who had distinguished enough careers in the NFL to be remembered, it is a fairly short list. At the head of the class is Steve Young, the only lefty QB in the Hall of Fame. Others of note include Boomer Esiason, Ken Stabler, Jim Zorn and Bobby Douglass of yesteryear, current Philadelphia Eagles star Michael Vick and Jets backup Mark Brunell, who was once a star in Jacksonville.
But as Mike Klis of the Denver Post points out, this week, there could be as many as four left-handers doing the pitching for their respective teams. The Broncos, of course, have turned their offense over to Tim Tebow, and Vick (if he is healthy enough to play with broken ribs) are entrenched as starters in the league.
Now, thanks to injuries in Houston and Kansas City, the Texans are going with lefty Matt Leinart and the Chiefs will hand the reins to Tyler Palko. Let the lefty revolution begin.
