It turns out Osi Umenyiora will have surgery on his right knee after all.

About a week after the defensive end traveled to Atlanta to have it checked out by a specialist, the New York Giants defensive end has opted for surgery, according to the team.

The Giants announced that Umenyiora is expected to return in three to four weeks, meaning he could be in question for the regular season opener.

Umenyiora has been angling for a contract extension with two years remaining on his current deal. Second-year pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul has looked good in his absence. This decision allows Umenyiora to get the knee further checked out and hopefully it will not be a problem for him or the team moving forward.
