Army takes personal approach to find date for Saturday

Only in 2020.

In a strange college football season, Army athletic director Mike Buddie tweeted a seemingly appropriate message on Sunday as he seeks to fill out his football team’s schedule.

“Undefeated, COVID negative college football team from NY looking for like minded, disciplined team for a date next Saturday… must also be COVID negative!,” Buddie wrote. “Twitter, do your thing!”

Army originally had a date with BYU on Saturday, but that was called off out of COVID-19 concerns among the Cougars. The game was scheduled to be played at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y., and nationally televised by CBS.

The teams announced the game’s postponement following what both said was a “small number” of positive tests in the BYU program.

“We appreciate the university administration, state health officials and a variety of medical experts who have helped us navigate these unprecedented times,” BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said. “While we share the disappointment of everyone involved in the game between BYU and Army, safety as well as the physical and mental well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the opposing team is our top priority.”

The teams both have Nov. 28 open on their schedule if they want to reschedule.

Army is 2-0 on the young season after a 42-0 win on Sept. 5 over Middle Tennessee State and a 37-7 home win on Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe. The Black Knights’ next scheduled game is Sept. 26 at Cincinnati.

BYU trounced Navy 55-3 in the season opener on Sept. 7. The Cougars next are scheduled to host Troy on Sept. 26.

Army and BYU never have met on the football field, and the Sept. 19 game was a late add. The two schools play independent schedules, and both lost more than half of their games as some conferences called off their fall seasons because of the coronavirus pandemic.
