Baylor returns to practice field after COVID-19 pause
After a pandemic-induced 10-day layoff, the Baylor Bears returned to the practice field on Sunday.
The Bears, who have played only two games this season because of COVID-19 issues, put all team activities on hold on Oct. 8 so the university could begin contact tracing on recent positive test results.
The Bears are scheduled to face the host Texas Longhorns on Saturday.
Last week, athletic director Mack Rhoades said he believed a breakout of 42 active cases of COVID-19 (28 players, 14 football staff members) happened when an individual who received a false negative test for the virus was then able to go with the team to West Virginia for the game on Oct. 3.
The Bears’ home game against Oklahoma State, which was to have been played last Saturday, has been rescheduled for Dec. 12.
The first game of the season was to be against visiting Louisiana Tech on Sept. 12, but the Bulldogs’ COVID-19 issues prompted a postponement. A quickly scheduled matchup with Houston for Sept. 19 fell through when the Bears were unable to meet the league’s COVID-19 thresholds at a key position group, ESPN reported at the time.
Neither of those games has been rescheduled.
The Bears (1-1) routed Kansas 47-14 on Sept. 26 before losing at West Virginia 27-21 in double overtime.
