CFP puts off expansion talks to Dec. 1

A decision about possible expansion of the College Football Playoff won’t be made this month.

Following a Thursday meeting of the CFP management committee in Grapevine, Texas, CFP executive director Bill Hancock announced that the move to alter the current four-team format was tabled until Dec. 1. However, he added that such a timetable is “not set in stone.”

Hancock added that the management committee — consisting of the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick — must decide between a future eight-team format and a 12-team format by the end of the year in order for the change to take place ahead of the 2024-25 season.

“There is a consensus that expansion would be good for college football,” Hancock said. “It’s just a matter of how.”

Any potential change would be for just the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons — the last two years of the CFP’s current 12-year contract. Should the committee be unable to come to a unanimous decision on a shift to eight or 12 teams, the four-game system would remain in place for those years.

Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren told The Athletic regarding the CFP meetings, “We had a productive two days. It was a worthwhile trip to Dallas. We had positive energy in the room. We’re able to work through a lot of the issues that are important. We’re at the point now where we need to start really unpacking some of the more meaty issues. So I look forward to our next meeting. … I always try to go by the tone and energy in the room, and it was really positive energy in the room.”

This season’s College Football Playoff will consist of semifinal games on Dec. 31 in Arlington, Texas, and Miami Gardens, Fla., followed by the championship game on Jan. 10 in Indianapolis.
