Five-star DT Payne commits to Alabama

Five-star prospect Damon Payne, the top defensive tackle in the Class of 2021, committed to Alabama.

Payne made his announcement Sunday with a simple statement on Twitter that read “COMMITTED.”

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Payne, from Belleville, Mich., chose the Crimson Tide over Arizona State, Kentucky, Michigan State and Southern Cal. The 247Sports composite lists Payne as No. 1 at his position and No. 14 overall in the nation.

“I just knew where I wanted to go. I had it set in my mind, didn’t have any second thoughts so I went ahead and made the decision,” Payne told 247Sports. “It felt like home. There’s no place like it. I feel like it’s the greatest place on Earth.”

Playing at Belleville High School, Payne posted 59 tackles (22 for loss) and eight sacks as a junior.

Payne is the fourth five-star prospect in Alabama’s 2021 recruiting class, which now sits at No. 2 in the 247Sports rankings, trailing Ohio State.
