Florida State WR Matthews enters transfer portal

Florida State wideout D.J. Matthews has entered the transfer portal, coach Mike Norvell said Tuesday.

Matthews tweeted Saturday that he “opted out way back.”

Matthews tweeted in August that he had tested positive for COVID-19 before deleting the tweet. He later retweeted fellow wide receiver Warren Thompson’s open letter that slammed the team’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Thompson later apologized.

Norvell acknowledged on Sept. 4 that he had not spoken to Matthews “in a little while.” Norvell said Tuesday he supports Matthews, who has one year of eligibility remaining.

“At the end of the day, every time you go through transition, there’s some things that fit better than others, and DJ’s making a decision for his future,” Norvell told reporters. “Fully support him in that decision.”

Matthews was Florida State’s second-leading receiver last season with 36 receptions for 355 yards and three touchdowns.

He started six games in 2018 and recorded 42 receptions for 382 yards and one touchdown. Matthew ranks 10th in team history with 582 punt return yards.
