Georgia Tech overcomes blocked FGs, wins at Florida St.

Freshman kicker Jude Kelley overcame two blocked field-goal attempts and a blocked extra point try to boot a 32-yard kick through the uprights with 8:56 left in the fourth quarter, helping Georgia Tech rally from a 10-point halftime deficit and beat host Florida State 16-13 Saturday in Tallahassee.

The Seminoles switched quarterbacks after Kelley’s go-ahead field goal, turning to sophomore Jordan Travis in place of starter James Blackman. Blackman re-entered during the drive, but his run on fourth-and-8 was stopped as he fumbled, and the Yellow Jackets took over.

Georgia Tech (1-0) made one final defensive stand to seal the win, as Blackman threw incomplete on fourth down to Tamorrion Terry with a minute to play and the Yellow Jackets ran out the clock.

The game ended five hours after it started thanks to two weather delays, one that lasted one hour and 15 minutes.

After a first half of missed opportunities, the Yellow Jackets got a 19-yard touchdown run in the third quarter from Jordan Mason with 6:13 to go in the third quarter to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive.

Georgia Tech had a chance at its first lead of the game after Malachi Carter hauled in Jeff Sims’ 15-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. But Janarius Robinson blocked his second kick of the game, swatting away true freshman Jude Kelley’s extra point try and leaving the game tied at 13 with 13:17 to play.

Later, Curtis Ryans sacked Blackman and stripped the ball, with David Curry recovering and setting up Kelley’s successful field goal.

Parker Grothau made two of three field-goal tries for the Seminoles (0-1). Florida State lost leads of 10-0 at halftime and 13-7 in the second half and was outgained in total offense by 150 yards, 438-288.

Asante Samuel Jr. had two interceptions in the first half for Florida State, ending two long Georgia Tech drives.

Georgia Tech (1-0) was able to move the ball on offense, but four drives deep into Florida State territory ended on two interceptions and two blocked field-goal attempts. Robinson and preseason All-American defensive lineman Marvin Wilson blocked attempts.

Blackman found Keyshawn Helton for a three-yard touchdown pass with 8:05 left in the first quarter.

A lightning strike delayed the start of the game 30 minutes, and more lightning and a passing storm stopped the game for another hour and 15 minutes right after Florida State’s first touchdown.
