Injured Penn State RB Cain out for the season

Penn State running back Noah Cain will miss the rest of the season with a lower-body injury, Nittany Lions coach James Franklin announced Tuesday.

Cain exited after carrying three times in the first quarter of Saturday’s 36-35 overtime loss at Indiana. He went to the locker room for treatment and returned to the sideline with crutches and a boot on his left foot.

The 5-foot-10, 226-pound sophomore rushed for 13 yards and did not catch a pass in the season-opening setback, which dropped Penn State from No. 8 to No. 18 in the poll.

“Love Noah, so much respect for Noah,” Franklin said. “He really had an unbelievable offseason and worked really hard for this opportunity.”

As a true freshman in 2019, Cain played in 10 games (one start) and rushed for 443 yards and eight touchdowns. He caught seven passes for 52 yards.

The Nittany Lions were already playing without running back Journey Brown due to an undisclosed medical issue that could keep him out all season. Brown rushed for 890 yards and 12 TDs last season.

Penn State (0-1) hosts No. 3 Ohio State (1-0) on Saturday in State College, Pa. Sophomore Devyn Ford will likely get the start after rushing for 69 yards and a touchdown against the Hoosiers.
