Kansas coach Miles won’t travel with team as a precaution
Kansas coach Les Miles has been cleared to return to work after testing positive for COVID-19 but will not travel with the team to West Virginia for Saturday’s game, he said Friday.
Tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Joshua Eargle will serve as the Jayhawks’ acting head coach against the Mountaineers. He has previous head coaching experience at East Texas Baptist University from 2015-18.
Miles, who turns 67 in November, announced his positive test on Oct. 8.
“I am very grateful for the high level of care that I have received throughout my time since I tested positive for COVID-19 early last week. I continue to feel healthy and strong, and was fortunate to only have mild symptoms,” Miles said in a statement issued by the university.
“However, after much consideration and several in-depth conversations with the medical team, our coaching staff, and Kansas Athletics administration, I have made the difficult decision to not make the trip to West Virginia. While my 10-day isolation window was completed this morning, there is too much still unknown about this virus for me to feel 100 percent confident that I won’t transmit it to someone who comes into close contact with me on the team charter, hotel or at the game Saturday.”
Miles, who is in his second season at Kansas, said he will return to the Jayhawks on Sunday.
The Jayhawks (0-3, 0-2 Big 12) had a bye last weekend and will take on the Mountaineers (2-1, 1-1) Saturday at noon ET in Morgantown, W.Va.
