Miami football in COVID protocols; Sun Bowl unclear

The Miami (Fla.) program entered COVID-19 protocols, it announced Tuesday, 10 days out from its scheduled appearance in the Sun Bowl.

Several Miami players tested positive for the virus, the Miami Herald reported.

“The University remains committed to its goal of participating in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, on Friday, December 31, against Washington State while ensuring the continued health and safety of its student-athletes, coaches and staff,” a news release from the program read.

The Sun Bowl Association’s executive director, Bernie Olivas, also released a statement saying the group “remains committed” to putting on a game between Miami and Washington State, but that the chief concern was the safety of all those involved.

“We are doing all we can to make sure that we follow state and federal guidelines to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all who attend, including student-athletes, coaches, support staff, fans and employees,” Olivas said. “We will wait for updates from Miami and the ACC over the next 48-plus hours to ensure all protocols are followed.”

The Hurricanes finished the regular season 7-5, fired coach Manny Diaz and replaced him with Oregon coach Mario Cristobal. However, the team is to be led by interim coach Jess Simpson at the Sun Bowl. Washington State also is 7-5.
