Ohio State Penn State: opening odds report

There’s only one ranked matchup on the college football schedule in Week 9, as the No.3 Ohio State Buckeyes visit the No. 18 Penn State Nittany Lions as double-digit road favorites.

This matchup is one of 21 road favorites on the opening lines, as the Buckeyes opened as a 12.5-point favorite. Ohio State got their season started last week by rolling over Nebraska 52-27 as a 27.5-point favorite. Penn State probably would like to forget last week’s season-opener, as they were upset by Indiana 36-35 as a 6.5-point road favorite.

Other huge point spreads

In addition to the Ohio State Penn State opening odds, where the spread is huge, there are three games with 30-plus point spread this week. Predictably, the largest spread found in the Mississippi Rebels and Alabama Crimson Tide matchup.

Alabama opened as a 32-point home favorite against Mississippi. When favored by 30 points or more Alabama is 30-0 straight up in their last 30 games, but only 11-19 against the spread.

Also favored by 30-plus points this week are the Clemson Tigers and the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

The Tigers, who are still the top-ranked team in the nation, are 31.5-point home favorites versus the Boston College Eagles. Clemson was a 47-point favorite last week, but failed to cover in a 47-21 win over Syracuse.

Appalachian State is a 31.5-point road favorite against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. Appalachian State is 9-1 in their last 10 games, but only 5-5 ATS. When favored by 30 points or more they’re 7-0 SU and 4-3 ATS in their last seven.

A few other large road favorites on the opening odds this week include the Marshall Thundering Herd, the Iowa State Cyclones and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Marshall opened as a 22.5-point road favorite in the Friday night matchup against Florida International. When favored by 20-plus points Marshall has won seven straight with a 2-5 record ATS. They’re also 3-4 ATS in their last seven as a road favorite.

Iowa State opened as a 28.5-point road favorite against Kansas. Betting on Kansas has been basically throwing your money away as they’ve dropped nine straight with a 1-7-1 ATS record. Against Kansas the Cyclones are 9-1 SU and 6-4 ATS in their last 10.

The Fighting Irish opened as a 20-point road favorite against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. As a road favorite Notre Dame is 10-2 SU and 7-4-1 ATS in their last 12 games. Georgia Tech is 2-7 ATS in their last nine as a home underdog.
