Ohio State’s Wade joins Davis in returning to play

Ohio State star cornerback Shaun Wade said Thursday that he is opting back into the 2020 season just three days after declaring he wouldn’t play and would concentrate on preparing for the NFL draft.

With the Big Ten deciding to hold a fall season that will begin in late October, Wade has changed in mind.

“Really, back in January, I didn’t go to the draft and my goal was to come back, be a captain, get my degree,” Wade said Thursday on ESPN. “And they didn’t cancel football. Now it’s back. So since it’s back, we’ve got a chance to win a national championship. That’s been my goal since day one.

“So that’s what we’re striving for. That’s what we’re gonna strive for when we get back in October.”

Wade is the second Ohio State player to opt back in. Standout guard Wyatt Davis indicated Wednesday night that he was returning to the Buckeyes.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Wade ranked No. 7 among draft-eligible prospects. He was projected as an early-round pick in the 2020 draft before opting to return for his senior season in Columbus.

Wade played in all 14 games last season, registering 26 tackles, four tackles for loss, one interception, two forced fumbles and eight pass breakups.

Davis, a 6-foot-4, 315-pound junior, also is a projected first-round pick.

The Big Ten announced Wednesday that it plans to play a season, beginning with games on Oct. 23 and 24.
