Penn State RB Brown to step away from football

Penn State running back Journey Brown elected Wednesday to stop playing football after he was diagnosed with a condition that can impede blood flow to the heart.

Brown, a redshirt junior, learned of his diagnosis in October and has not played in any of the Nittany Lions’ three games this season.

The condition, known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, was discovered after Brown took a COVID-19 test. Penn State head coach James Franklin said the condition is not COVID-19 related.

“I didn’t even expect to make it this far but it’s about the Journey, not the destination,” Brown posted to Twitter on Wednesday. The post included an extended quote where Brown referenced just how much football meant to him.

The 21-year-old Brown, who is a recreation, park, tourism management major, rushed for 890 yards and 12 touchdowns last season as the Nittany Lions went 11-2 and earned a 53-39 Cotton Bowl victory over Memphis. In that Cotton Bowl, Brown rushed for a career-best 202 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns.

“The pain of not being able to play the game I love anymore hurts and I can’t explain how I am feeling right now,” Brown said in his extended Twitter post. “However, I can walk away from the game knowing I truly gave my all at every practice, on every down and in the locker room every day.”
