QB Duggan rejoins TCU after heart procedure

TCU quarterback Max Duggan could see action on Saturday in the season opener for the Horned Frogs, just about a month after undergoing a heart procedure.

Coach Gary Patterson told reporters Monday that Duggan returned to practice about two weeks ago. A lifelong heart issue was discovered during COVID-19 testing in August, and Duggan was ruled out indefinitely.

“I don’t know if he’ll start,” said Patterson, who has not named a starting quarterback. “(Matthew) Downing has been the guy (since Duggan has been out). He’s thrown the ball really well.”

Downing, a Georgia transfer, is a redshirt sophomore.

As a freshman last season, Duggan played in 12 games (10 starts) for the 5-7 Horned Frogs. He completed 181 passes for 2,077 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, and he added 555 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

The 247Sports composite listed Duggan, an Iowa native, as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the nation in the Class of 2019.

The Horned Frogs will host Iowa State (0-1) in a Big 12 matchup on Saturday.
