Rattler, Mims take Oklahoma past TCU
Spencer Rattler threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns as visiting Oklahoma rolled past TCU 33-14 on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
It was the second consecutive victory for the Sooners (3-2, 2-2 Big 12) after dropping their two previous games. TCU (1-3, 1-3) fell for the second consecutive game.
Both of Rattler’s touchdowns went to freshman Marvin Mims for 50 yards in the second quarter and 61 yards in the third quarter.
On the first of the two, Mims was wide open and fought of a tackle near the goal line to finish off the score.
The second saw Mims make a difficult catch over the TCU defense before cruising into the end zone.
Mims had four catches for 132 yards. His six touchdown receptions through his first five career games is a Sooners record.
While Oklahoma’s offense had plenty of success, TCU struggled to finish off drives.
The Horned Frogs rushed for just 75 yards on 25 carries, with 34 of those on a Max Duggan run with just over four minutes remaining. The Sooners had nine tackles for loss, including three sacks of Duggan.
Duggan was 25 of 35 for 276 yards with one touchdowns.
The Sooners had struggled in the fourth quarter this season, getting outscored 45-10 in conference play. Those late struggles led to defeats against Kansas State and Iowa State, and why they went into overtime against Texas two weeks ago despite a two-touchdown lead with less than four minutes to play.
On Saturday, Oklahoma jumped out to a 17-0 lead, capped by Mims’ first touchdown and then extended what was a 10-point halftime lead to 30-7 by early in the fourth.
Sooners wide receiver Theo Wease, who had been quiet much of the early part of the season before emerging against Texas, had three catches for 87 yards.
Oklahoma running back T.J. Pledger had 22 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown, his second consecutive 100-yard performance.
