Report: Texas Tech hiring Baylor’s Joey McGuire as head coach

Texas Tech is expected to introduce Baylor associate head coach Joey McGuire as the next head football coach of the Red Raiders on Monday, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported.

He replaces Matt Wells, who was fired on Oct. 25 with a 5-3 record in his third season in Lubbock. Wells’ overall mark with the program was 13-17.

Texas Tech also considered Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and Southern California offensive coordinator — and former Red Raiders quarterback — Graham Harrell for the vacancy, per the report.

McGuire has coached tight ends, defensive ends and linebackers during five seasons at Baylor under head coaches Matt Rhule (2017-19) and Dave Aranda. He has been the associate head coach for three seasons.

Prior to joining Rhule’s staff, McGuire led Cedar Hill High School to three Texas state championships. He compiled a 141-42 record and was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2020.

It’s not clear when McGuire would join the Red Raiders. Baylor is 7-2 this season, 4-2 in the Big 12, and ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press Top 25.

Texas Tech is scheduled to play at Baylor on Nov. 27.
