Reports: Walden leaves Southern Miss to coach FCS Austin Peay
Southern Miss interim coach Scotty Walden is leaving the program immediately to become the new coach at Austin Peay, according to reports.
Walden took over at Southern Miss after Jay Hopson resigned as head coach one game into the season. Assistant Tim Billings will be the new interim head coach, the Golden Eagles’ third just five games into the season. Southern Miss is 1-4.
Billings will coach the team against Rice on Saturday.
Austin Peay, a Football Championship Series school, has been without a head coach since Mark Hudspeth resigned for personal reasons over the summer.
The Ohio Valley Conference postponed conference games until the spring but allowed teams to play up to four non-conference games during the fall.
Austin Peay went 0-3 under interim coach Marquase Lovings, losing to Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Central Arkansas. Austin Peay’s first conference game is Feb. 21 vs. Tennessee Tech.
Walden will begin filling out a coaching staff. He went 1-2 as the interim coach at Southern Miss.
