SMU student section removed for violating COVID protocols

The entire SMU student section was removed from Saturday night’s game against Memphis for not adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols, the school said following the game.

The school allowed for 1,000 students to attend the game, so long as they follow guidelines for social distancing and wearing masks. Those protocols were violated.

“During the game, some students began to gather and disregard these safety measures. They were asked to spread out and mask when in close contact. After numerous attempts by staff and security to get the students to comply with these safety requirements, it became necessary to clear the area,” read a statement released by the university, located in Dallas.

Campus police cleared out the students at halftime of the game, eventually won by the Mustangs, 30-27 over No. 25 Memphis.
