SMU’s Buechele to enter 2021 NFL Draft
SMU quarterback Shane Buechele announced he will enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
A fifth-year senior, Buechele, 22, could have chosen to take advantage of the extra season the NCAA awarded amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It has been an honor to finish my college football career at SMU and to have done it while obtaining a quality education and achieving a masters degree,” he posted, in part, to Twitter on Friday night. “I want to thank the coaches, staff and fans for making my experience one I’ll never forget.”
The Mustangs (7-3) will not appear in a bowl game because of COVID-19 issues that forced them to withdraw from the Frisco Bowl earlier this week.
Buechele began his college career at Texas in 2016, starting 12 games as a freshman. He started seven games as a sophomore before being replaced by Sam Ehlinger, then transferred to SMU in 2018.
He started the past two seasons for the Mustangs and put up eye-popping numbers: 7,024 passing yards and 57 touchdowns against 16 interceptions.
Pro Football Focus lists Buechele as the No. 8 quarterback in 2021 NFL Draft class.
