South Carolina pulls out of Gasparilla Bowl
South Carolina pulled out of this Saturday’s Gasparilla Bowl against UAB due to COVID-19 issues.
“Between members of the coaching staff and student-athletes, COVID and contact tracing has taken a toll too high for us to overcome,” South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said in a statement on Tuesday. “I have notified the bowl and the SEC office that we are not able to play in the game on Saturday.”
The Gamecocks will finish the season at 2-8. Interim coach Mike Bobo was set to coach his fourth straight game in place of Will Muschamp, who was dismissed in November. South Carolina hired Shane Beamer as head coach earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the UAB Blazers (6-3) are waiting to find out if a replacement opponent can be found on short notice.
Bowl officials issued a statement saying they are “working on the next steps” and will provide an update soon.
