Top 5 teams hold steady in CFP rankings

All remained the same at the top of the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday ahead of championship weekend.

Alabama (10-0) remains No. 1 ahead of Notre Dame (10-0), Clemson (9-1) and Ohio State (5-0). Texas A&M (7-1) holds steady at No. 5. Iowa State (8-2) moved up to spot No. 6 while Florida (8-2) dropped to 7th on the heels of its upset loss at home last week to LSU.

The order, at least, will change at least in one significant way after Saturday as Clemson and Notre Dame clash for the second time this season, this time in the ACC title game. A loss by Clemson would knock them from the final four while a loss incurred by Notre Dame might not produce the same result. The Irish handed the Tigers their lone loss.

Ohio State takes center stage first on Saturday in the Big Ten title game against No. 14 Northwestern. The Big Ten had to amend its rules to allow the Buckeyes to even play in the championship. The league set a minimum of six games to qualify for the title game but Ohio State had three games lost to COVID-19.

Clemson vs. Notre Dame follows with Alabama taking on the Gators in the SEC Championship game Saturday night.

Georgia (7-2) moved up a spot to No. 8, Cincinnati (8-0) dropped a spot to 9th despite remaining unbeaten, and Oklahoma (7-2) moved into the Top 10.

The Sooners and Cyclones get to state their case one last time in the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday.

Georgia’s regular season is over after its finale against Vanderbilt was postponed.

The week’s biggest mover — albeit downward — this week was Miami. The Hurricanes dropped eight spots to No. 18 after getting destroyed by North Carolina last week.

Texas A&M, clinging to hopes of getting in, plays its final regular season game on Saturday against Tennessee.

The CFP selection committee is slated to announce the final selections on Sunday. The CFP semifinals will be held in the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, with the winners advancing to play in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Jan. 11.
