Top recruit in 2022 QB Ewers decommits from Texas
Prep quarterback Quinn Ewers, the consensus top-ranked quarterback prospect in the Class of 2022, announced Wednesday he has decommitted from the Texas Longhorns program.
In a post on his Twitter account, the Southland, Texas, native explained his decision
“Recently, as I’ve competed alongside my teammates during my junior season at Southlake Carroll, I’ve also taken some time to think about my future,” Ewers wrote. “Given the COVID-19 pandemic facing us, this has been a challenging year for all students like myself. With the support of my family, I tried to navigate the recruiting process the best way I could.
“With the process being abnormal this season, I tried my best to keep an open mind to all possibilities.”
The loss of the in-state talent Ewers, listed as 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, for the Longhorns is a recruiting blow. Several outlets rate the teen in the top 10 overall prospects for his grade, with ESPN touting him as the best among all positions.
Ewers originally committed to Texas in August, but he was recruited hard by Ohio State as well. After Ewers’ post, recruiting outlet 247sports.com designated the Buckeyes as the most likely to land the quarterback.
According to Rivals, Ewers’ departure leaves coach Tom Herman’s Longhorns down to a pair of four-star commitments in 2022: wide receiver Phaizon Wilson and defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau.
