Troy-South Alabama rivalry game PPD due to COVID-19

The annual Battle for the Belt rivalry game between South Alabama and Troy, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed because of COVID-19.

In a news release Tuesday, South Alabama said the postponement was “due to precautionary measures concerning the availability of student-athletes.”

The Jaguars also temporarily paused football workouts.

The school did not reveal COVID-19 testing results or how many players were in quarantine.

“This postponement is unfortunate, however it’s prudent and wise,” said Joel Erdmann, South Alabama’s athletic director. “Our most significant concern is the well-being of our student-athletes. We are looking forward to hosting Troy at Hancock Whitney Stadium at a date to be determined. We appreciate the collaboration and understanding of Troy, and the leadership of the Sun Belt Conference office in working through this situation.”

The game has not been rescheduled yet.

“We are obviously disappointed for our team but certainly respect this decision,” Troy athletic director Brent Jones said. “This is a tremendous rivalry game for both teams and fan bases.”

Troy (1-1) is scheduled to host conference foe Texas State on Oct. 10. South Alabama (1-2) isn’t slated to play again until Oct. 17, also against Texas State.
