Virginia Union freshman dies after collapsing at practice
Quandarius Wilburn, an incoming freshman football player at Division II Virginia Union, died after collapsing during a practice over the weekend, according to the university. He was 19.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for our campus community,” university president Hakim Lucas said in a letter to the campus community Monday. “I want to personally encourage each of your to keep Mr. Wilburn’s family in your prayers, as well as the VUU athletics department.”
Wilburn was a defensive end who came from Wadley, Georgia, to Virginia Union, a private HBCU in Richmond, Va. He graduated high school earlier this year.
Wilburn’s grandmother told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that Wilburn suffered cardiac arrest, though the autopsy is still pending.
The school said Wilburn collapsed during a conditioning drill on Sunday.
