The Dallas police department reversed course Friday night, announcing that it will investigate a domestic violence complaint against troubled Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel.
On Thursday, Fort Worth and Dallas law enforcement officials announced that they wouldn't file charges against the former Texas A&M star and considered the case closed. Colleen Crowley, Manziel's former girlfriend, alleged that the NFL player hit her several times, including a blow to her left ear during an ugly altercation that started in Dallas and ended at her apartment in Fort Worth near the Texas Christian campus.
Crowley, a Houston native, model and TCU student, told police that Manziel behaved as if he was on drugs. Fort Worth police also stated that Crowley became uncooperative and irritated with them during their interview.
Manziel's former agent, Erik Burkhardt, cut ties with him Friday. Manziel's father, Paul Manziel, told the Dallas Morning News that the former Heisman Trophy winner had refused twice to go back to a rehab facility this week after receiving inpatient treatment last year for multiple dependency issues.
"The Dallas Police Department received a complaint of a domestic violence assault that occurred in Dallas on January 30," the police department said in a statement. "A criminal investigation into the incident, in which Johnathan Manziel is the listed suspect, has been initiated. Detectives will thoroughly investigate the case to determine what criminal charges, if any, will be filed and victim services will be offered.
"As there are many emotional factors involved, it is not uncommon for a victim of domestic violence to question or delay reporting an assault. This is an on-going investigation and updates will be made as information becomes available."
