As with numerous players nationally and in the SEC, LSU defensive end Lewis Neal is preparing for his senior season of college with hopes of getting drafted into the NFL. Should an NFL career not work out, Neal already has proved he has other skills to make a living.
Neal is a day trader on the Foreign Exchange market, or “Forex.” He has been successful in this venture, at times pulling in upward of five figures a week.
He talked about his success as a day trader in an interview with CampusSports.net. Neal says he has been doing this since his senior year of high school in Wilson, N.C.
“I just got into investing because it was a way to help me out and show me a different view on life,” Neal said. “And with football, you’ve always got to have a stream of income because you need a long-term income if you want to live how you want to live. Investing is just one way, you know. There are so many other ways that I’ve got in the works right now, so this is just the beginning.”
The Forex turns over an average of $4 trillion per day. Neal said he is part of a community of traders and has mentors helping guide him along the way. He added that it teaches him lessons that can be used on the field as well.
“You have to control your emotions because it’s money,” Neal said. “When you’re moving your money and there is a risk, you have to stay in control.
“It absolutely helps on the field. I know how to stay calm in certain situations and also how to stay disciplined in certain situations without trying to do too much or too little. It does help that I know how to control my mind.”
Neal is coming off a 2015 season in which he registered career-highs in tackles for loss (9.5) and sacks (eight). He could find himself becoming a first-round pick in next April’s NFL Draft.
