The New York Jets' quarterback competition got off to an inauspicious start.
Starter Mark Sanchez was intercepted by Detroit Lions rookie defensive lineman Ziggy Ansah with the turnover returned for a touchdown and nearly had another interception on another screen pass.
Rookie challenger Geno Smith injured his right ankle in the third quarter of a 26-17 loss.
Smith told reporters the ankle wasn't broken and he could return to practice next week.
"I was in complete disbelief" when the injury happened, Smith told reporters.
The interception followed a rough season from Sanchez, who has 52 turnovers over the past two seasons. He rallied to finish 10 of 13 for 125 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jeff Cumberland.
"Other than one crappy play, it wasn't too bad," Sanchez said.
As for Smith, he completed all but one of his seven throws for 47 yards.
He doesn't lack for confidence.
The second-round draft pick from West Virginia said: "I think I played exceptionally well."
