Simpson withdraws from BMW Championship to rest

Webb Simpson, who sits third in the FedExCup standings, has withdrawn from this weekend's BMW Championship in order to rest for the following week's Tour Championship.

"After playing consecutive weeks, Webb is taking the week off in order to be rested for the TOUR Championship in Atlanta," Simpson's reps said in a statement released by the PGA Tour.

Simpson's withdrawal leaves the BMW field at 69.

Simpson, 35, sits at 2,163 points in the FedEx Cup, behind only Justin Thomas (2,479) and leader Dustin Johnson (2,571).

Simpson has two wins, nine Top 25s and nearly $5.1 million in earnings this season. Simpson tied for sixth in last week's Northern Trust at TPC Boston.
