49ers’ Shanahan: WR Samuel likely out rest of season

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t expecting to see wide receiver Deebo Samuel return to the field during the remainder of the regular season.

Samuel sustained a hamstring strain while rushing for nine yards on the opening play of the 49ers’ 23-15 loss to the Washington Football Team on Sunday. An MRI on Monday revealed the injury for Samuel, who missed three games earlier this season with a similar ailment.

“He’s going to be out awhile, not ready to put a timeline on it yet,” Shanahan said Monday. “I think we’d have to make the playoffs for him to come back.”

That’s likely a tall order for the 49ers (5-8), who reside two games in back of the Arizona Cardinals (7-6) for the seventh postseason slot. San Francisco, which faces Arizona in Week 16, likely would need help from other teams to get into the playoffs.

Samuel has recorded 33 catches for 391 yards and one touchdown in seven games this season. He has also rushed eight times for 26 yards.

The 24-year-old Samuel caught 57 passes for 802 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games during his rookie season in 2019.
