Falcons vs Panthers Pick, Odds, Trends

The Atlanta Falcons have dominated this matchup as of late, rolling to an 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs the Carolina Panthers. They are also 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games, among numerous trends that all seem to point towards taking Atlanta.

But betting history teaches us to examine all factors and dig deeper into the handicapping took box. When we do that, we are going against the grain and our Falcons Panthers pick is Carolina -2.5 on Thursday Night Football.

Why Carolina can cover the spread 

The Panthers have been one of the biggest surprises this season, as they are right in the playoff hunt sitting at 3-4 after a tough loss against the New Orleans Saints. Teddy Bridgewater continues to play well, as he went 23/28 for 254 yards and 2 TDs in their loss to the Saints. 

The Falcons defense has struggled against the pass this season. Atlanta owns the 31st ranked DVOA pass defense, and it has been a serious problem for the 1-6 Falcons all year. The Panthers have two of the top 7 receiving yards leaders on their roster in Robby Anderson and D.J Moore.

Anderson is 2nd with 640 yards, and Moore is 7th with 567 yards. The Falcons are going to have problems covering the Panthers receivers. 

Christian McCaffery was activated off IR this week, however it looks like the Panthers will keep him out another week. Mike Davis has been a very capable backup, and the Falcons have also struggled against the run. The Panthers are going to put up their fair share of points in this one. 

Why Atlanta can cover the spread

The Falcons lost in dramatic fashion yet again in Week 7, as they went down to the Lions 23-22 on a last second touchdown. 

Atlanta is going to have to establish a run game on Thursday Night. The Panthers own the 27th DVOA rush defense, so Todd Gurley will have to be a big part of this offense. His usage is increasing every week, as he has 20 carries or more in his past two games. The Falcons have played better football under interim Head Coach Raheem Morris, as if it wasn’t for a colossal choke against the Lions, they would be 2-0 under Morris. 

Falcons Panthers Pick

The Falcons and Panthers met in Week 5, and the Panthers won 23-16. I don’t expect this to be a low scoring game like in Week 5, so I would also hammer the Over which is currently sitting at 50.5 and climbing.

I simply cannot trust the Falcons after last week and yet another crippling loss, so getting the Panthers at -2.5 is a steal as it provides the comfort of a half point in case this game is decided by a field goal.
