Browns’ coach to make history against Jaguars

The glass ceiling in football will be shattered for a second day in a row on Sunday when the Cleveland Browns face the Jaguars in Jacksonville.

Callie Brownson, who works as the Browns’ chief of staff, will coach tight ends, making her the first woman to serve as a positional coach in an NFL game. She will be filling in for tight ends coach Drew Petzing, who is missing the game following the birth of his first child on Saturday.

Her job as an interim coach comes a day after kicker Sarah Fuller of Vanderbilt became the first woman to compete in a football game for a Power Five conference team. Missouri shut out the Commodores 41-0 on Saturday, and Fuller’s only opportunity was the kickoff to start the second half.

Brownson, who previously played in the Women’s Football Alliance with the D.C. Divas, was a coaching intern with the Buffalo Bills in 2019. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski named her the team’s chief of staff in January.
