Browns DE Jadeveon Clowney’s illness not COVID-related

Cleveland Browns pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney missed Wednesday’s practice with an illness, but the worst-case scenario was avoided.

“He’s negative” for COVID-19, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters. “He’s just ill.”

Clowney was expected to make his Browns debut this Sunday as Cleveland opens its season at the Kansas City Chiefs. The 28-year-old’s illness could throw a wrench in those plans, but Stefanski said he was hopeful Clowney would return to practice Thursday.

The 2014 first overall draft pick is entering his eighth NFL season. After five seasons with the Houston Texans, Clowney played for the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 and the Tennessee Titans last season.

In eight starts with Tennessee, Clowney did not manage to record a sack. Getting to the passer was his calling card earlier in his career. He has 32 career sacks.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Clowney signed with the Browns in April on a one-year agreement worth as much as $10 million after incentives.
