Browns lose Odell Beckham Jr. to torn ACL

Odell Beckham Jr. is out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

Beckham was hurt on the second snap of the game for the Cleveland Browns, who beat the Cincinnati Bengals to improve to 5-2 on Sunday.

Beckham was injured in the first quarter attempting to chase down Bengals cornerback Darius Phillips. The injury is likely to require surgery in early November and will keep Beckham in a limited physical capacity for 6-9 months.

“I am probably going to beat myself up about that one for a long time,” quarterback Baker Mayfield said Sunday. “He is a guy who fights for this team, and in doing that, he got hurt. Prayers and hopes for the best. That one sucks.”

Beckham, running back Nick Chubb and tight end Austin Hooper (appendicitis) were out, but Mayfield led the Browns to a win Sunday by completing 21 straight passes. He said he was driven by Beckham’s words at halftime, when he told the quarterback to “Go be great.” He finished the game with five touchdown passes.

“Odell going down mid-game is not great, but we had a ton of guys step up,” Mayfield said. “You never want to have to go through that, but this team is resilient, and our guys showed that today.”

Beckham, who turns 28 on Nov. 5, has 23 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdowns this season. Acquired from the New York Giants in 2019, he played in all 16 games last season and collected 74 receptions for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns.
