Chiefs WR Watkins in concussion protocol

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins is in the NFL’s concussion protocol, coach Andy Reid announced Thursday.

Watkins absorbed a hit to the head from Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman during Kansas City’s 23-20 overtime victory on Sunday. Perryman was not penalized for the hit.

Reid noted Thursday that Watkins is also dealing with a neck issue.

“It’s more neck right now than the other part. He’s working through it,” Reid said.

Watkins, 27, has eight receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown in two games this season for the Chiefs (2-0), who rely on speedy wideout Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce and others in their potent passing game.

Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman would see additional snaps should Watkins be unable to face the host Baltimore Ravens (2-0) on Monday.

Watkins has 292 catches for 4,337 yards and 32 touchdowns in 78 career games with the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams and Chiefs. He was selected by the Bills with the fourth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.
