Daboll: QB Daniel Jones still Giants’ starter when healthy

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Daniel Jones will return as starting quarterback when he’s healthy.

Jones missed Sunday night’s 14-9 loss to the Buffalo Bills, with Tyrod Taylor getting the start.

Daboll was asked Monday whether there would be a quarterback controversy when Jones is healthy enough to return.

“Yeah, no,” Daboll replied.

Jones, 26, was ruled out after his fourth-quarter exit from the Giants’ 31-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 5. Jones was sacked on a blind-side hit, and his head cocked backward before he was driven to the turf.

Daboll said he didn’t have any injury updates on Jones, who told the Sunday night broadcast that his goal was to return in Week 7, a home game against Washington (3-3).

“I have no update on anything. I haven’t seen the doctors; it was a late one last night, so I have nothing on any injuries,” Daboll said.

Taylor went 24-for-36 for 200 yards against the Bills. But he cost the Giants a shot at points at the end of the first half when he handed the ball off inside the Bills’ 5-yard line without a timeout to use. Saquon Barkley was stopped short as time ran out.

“I think Tyrod did a good job,” Daboll said. “Threw the ball on time, made some good throws down the sideline to (wide receiver Darius) Slayton, got the ball out of his hands even when there was some pressure so did a good job of leading his team.

“Obviously, the team thing of 0-for-5 in the red zone, that’s a team thing, so something we’ve got to work on but continue to do that, but I thought Tyrod acquitted himself well.”
