Denver Broncos ownership in flux after trial put on hold

A trial that could have settled the future of the Denver Broncos ownership has been put on hold, potentially putting the resolution of the matter on hold as well.

The two oldest daughters of the late team owner Pat Bowlen – Beth Bowlen Wallace and Amie Klemmer — were set to begin a civil trial July 12 after suing the family trust, but the case has been stayed for now.

Cases are normally put on stay when all of the parties involved want to halt proceedings.

In the suit, they contended that their father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s prior to signing his most recent trust in 2009.

The stay could indicate a settlement of some kind is in the works behind closed doors, but it could also mean a potential sale, which would open up a different can of worms entirely.

Per reporting from The Athletic, a decades-long agreement between Bowlen and previous owner Edgar Kaiser’s estate could suddenly become relevant should the team come up for sale. The estate claims that Bowlen gave Kaiser right of first refusal in case the team ever came up for sale again — meaning the bidding would first go to the Kaiser estate.

For that reason, the Bowlen legacies may have extra incentive to work out a deal in arbitration, which the NFL might be motivated to encourage along as well.

Pat Bowlen passed away in 2019, about two months before his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
