Former Saints DT Moore dies

Former New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Derland Moore died Thursday at age 68 after a long illness, the team announced.

Moore played 13 of his 14 NFL seasons with the Saints (1973-85) and was selected as a member of the team’s Hall of Fame in 1991.

He was selected to the Saints’ 40th anniversary team and named one of the team’s 50 greatest players in 2016.

Moore concluded his NFL career with the New York Jets in 1986.

The Saints selected Moore with the No. 29 overall pick in the 1973 draft. He originally entered Oklahoma on a track scholarship and went from football walk-on to All-American.

In the NFL, he recorded 12 sacks, seven fumble recoveries and one interception in 171 career games (146 starts).

Moore is survived by his wife, Frannie, children Michelle, Brad and Chip, and six grandchildren.
