Giants fire Joe Judge after two seasons

The New York Giants fired head coach Joe Judge on Tuesday after two seasons and a 10-23 record.

The move comes 24 hours after general manager Dave Gettleman opted to retire.

“Steve (Tisch) and I both believe it is in the best interest of our franchise to move in another direction,” team president John Mara said in a statement Tuesday. “We met with Joe (Monday) afternoon to discuss the state of the team. I met again with Joe this afternoon, and it was during that conversation I informed Joe of our decision. We appreciate Joe’s efforts on behalf of the organization.

“I said before the season started that I wanted to feel good about the direction we were headed when we played our last game of the season. Unfortunately, I cannot make that statement, which is why we have made this decision,” Mara’s statement went on. “We will hire a general manager and that person will lead the effort to hire a new head coach.”

Judge had met with Giants players Monday and talked about the future, an implication that he would be returning for a third season. However, Mara and Tisch had concerns about how Judge would mesh with a new GM, NFL Network reported.

The Giants capped a woeful 4-13 season with a 22-7 loss to Washington on Sunday. The loss was punctuated by Judge’s decision for two quarterback sneaks pinned against his own end zone late in the first half from the victory formation.
