Giants’ Judge: QB Jones’ status in question vs. Browns

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is nursing a second “lower leg issue” heading into this weekend’s home game against the Cleveland Browns, coach Joe Judge said on Wednesday.

Jones sustained a right hamstring injury in New York’s 19-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 29. He returned from a one-game absence on Sunday before injuring his ankle in the second quarter of the 26-7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, multiple outlets reported.

Judge said he hasn’t decided whether Jones or Colt McCoy would get the nod for the Giants (5-8) on Sunday night against the Browns (9-4).

“I haven’t decided either way with Daniel,” Judge said. “I’ll go ahead and answer that right now. He came out, there’s really nothing worse for the wear with the previous injury. He did come out with some bumps and bruises. There’s another lower leg issue we’re dealing with right now. We’re going to go ahead and move him around in practice today, see where he’s at. I’m going to give him an opportunity this week to work through practice and see how he moves and how he reacts to things.”

Judge wants to see how Jones “can defend himself” in the pocket.

“As I’ve said before on how I’ll handle it, if he’s not at risk beyond any normal game, then we’ll go ahead and give him the opportunity to play. If we think that’s an issue, that he can’t go out there and defend himself, then we’ll make the best decision for him long-term and the team as well.”

Jones, 23, completed 11 of 21 passes for 127 yards against the Cardinals. He also had three fumbles, losing one.

The second-year quarterback has thrown for 2,462 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions in 12 games this season. He has also rushed for 403 yards and a score.

McCoy, 34, has completed 21 of 35 passes for one touchdown and one interception this season. He has appeared in 43 career games (29 starts) and thrown for 6,234 yards with 30 touchdowns and 28 interceptions since being selected by the Browns in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
