Giants’ Kitchens to call plays with Garrett isolated

Freddie Kitchens draws the assignment of calling plays against his former team Sunday night with New York Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett quarantined for COVID-19.

Garrett tested positive for the coronavirus and Kitchens, who served as Cleveland’s head coach last season, will fill the role of play-caller when the Browns (9-4) visit the Giants (5-8) in East Rutherford, N.J.

“We are currently working with the league’s chief medical officer regarding close contacts,” the Giants said in a statement Thursday. “Because of the league’s most updated protocols, Giants coaches and players did not meet on either Monday or Tuesday, and the majority of the coaching staff worked remotely.”

The Giants canceled practice Thursday and were awaiting feedback from the NFL after a thorough review of close contacts, but the team doesn’t expect additional assistant coaches or players to be isolated.

Kitchens and general manager John Dorsey were fired by the Browns following a 6-10 season in 2019.

Garrett, 54, coached the Dallas Cowboys for nine-plus seasons, compiling an 85-67 record from 2010-19.
