Giants QB Daniel Jones cleared to practice sans contact

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones advanced through concussion protocol and was cleared to participate in the non-contact portions of Thursday’s practice.

New York expects Jones to start on Sunday barring any setbacks, head coach Joe Judge said before the workout.

Following a hit at the goal line with 2:52 left in the second quarter of the Giants’ Week 5 loss at Dallas, Jones got to his feet but stumbled as his legs crossed attempting to return to the huddle.

Jones observed Wednesday’s practice and Judge said “at this point, everything looks positive” for the quarterback to be available Sunday when the Giants (1-4) face the Los Angeles Rams (4-1).

Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said a decision would be held for another day or two for the purpose of evaluating Jones’ physical response to returning to the field.

When he’s back, the Giants are not planning to curb Jones’ penchant to make plays as a runner. He’s averaging 6.6 yards per carry with 197 yards and two touchdowns in 2021.

“That’s such an asset for us, both him making plays spontaneously by moving in the pocket, but also some designed stuff. Those have been good plays for us,” Garrett said before Thursday’s practice. “But at the same time, we have to be aware of that. You don’t want to overdo that and put him in harm’s way. We’re understanding more, and he’s understanding more, the balance between those.”
