Giants RB Saquon Barkley out for preseason finale

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley will not play in the team’s preseason finale against the visiting New England Patriots on Sunday, coach Joe Judge announced.

Judge also said Friday that Barkley’s status for the Giants’ season opener against the visiting Denver Broncos on Sept. 12 has yet to be determined.

Barkley, 24, is working his way back from a torn ACL in his right knee sustained in a game against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 20, 2020. He was able to participate in live drills while wearing a no-contact jersey during Thursday’s joint practices with the Patriots.

“It feels good being with the team, feels good to get a couple of team reps,” Barkley said Thursday. “It’s just fun to be able to play football again, feel like a little kid and just taking it day by day.”

The Giants selected Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and he had a stellar rookie season that culminated in a Pro Bowl selection. Barkley led the NFL with 2,028 yards from scrimmage and chipped in 15 touchdowns.

Limited to 13 games in 2019 because of a high-ankle sprain, Barkley ran for 1,003 yards and added 438 receiving yards while scoring eight total touchdowns.
