Giants shut down QB Daniel Jones, WR Sterling Shepard for season

The New York Giants are shutting down Daniel Jones for the remainder of the season because of a neck injury but said Monday they expect the quarterback to make a “full recovery.”

The Giants also placed wide receiver Sterling Shepard on IR with a torn Achilles tendon, ending his season as well.

Jones, a third-year QB out of Duke, has been placed on injured reserve and will have to miss at least three games. The Giants (4-10) have only three games remaining, effectively ending his season.

Jones, 24, missed the Giants’ past three games because of the injury, which happened in a 13-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 28.

Ronnie Barnes, a senior vice president a head athletic trainer, said the decision to shut down Jones was made after discussions among the Giants and their medical team.

“At this point, Daniel has not been cleared for contact,” Barnes said in a statement Monday. “We felt the prudent decision was to place Daniel on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. With continued rest and treatment, we expect a full recovery.”

Jones was selected by New York with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. For the season, he has completed 64.3 percent of his passes (232 of 361) for 2,428 yards and 10 touchdowns, with seven interceptions.

Since replacing Eli Manning as the Giants’ starting quarterback, he has a 12-25 career record. In 38 career games (37 starts), Jones has thrown for 8,398 yards and 45 touchdowns, with 29 interceptions.

Mike Glennon has started at quarterback in place of Jones over three consecutive games, all Giants defeats. Jake Fromm replaced Glennon late in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and is likely to be the starter in the Giants’ next game, Dec. 26 at Philadelphia.

Shepard, 28, has 36 catches for 366 yards and one TD this season. He has played just 28 games combined over the past three seasons and has not played a full season since 2018.

The roster spots of Jones and Shepard were filled Monday by linebacker Jaylon Smith and defensive back Jarren Williams, both of whom were signed from the practice squad.

In addition, the Giants announced that defensive back Keion Crossen was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
