Jaguars name Nick Sorensen new special teams coach

The Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday announced Nick Sorensen as the team’s new special teams coordinator, replacing the departed Brian Schneider.

Sorensen spent the past eight seasons as an assistant coach with the Seattle Seahawks, most recently as secondary coach/nickel specialist last season.

Sorensen replaces Brian Schneider, who stepped away from the team for personal reasons on May 21, the second time in less than nine months he had done that.

Schneider also took leave from the Seattle Seahawks last September due to personal reasons. It wasn’t immediately known if this leave is for similar seasons. Schneider was in his 11th season as Seattle’s special teams coordinator.

Schneider was hired by the Jaguars in January. He worked with new Jacksonville coach Urban Meyer at Colorado State from 1994-95 when Meyer was an assistant coach at the school.

Schneider is the third coach or executive hired under the new Meyer regime who is no longer with the team after just a few months — or less — on the job. Senior vice president of operations and strategy Karim Kassam suddenly left the team last week and Chris Doyle resigned as the team’s director of sports performance a day after being announced in Februay over backlash from his time at Iowa. He allegedly made racist and derogatory comments to players.

Sorensen played 10 seasons as a safety and special-teams player, playing in 131 games for the St. Louis Rams (2001-02), Jaguars (2003-06) and Cleveland Browns (2007-10). He started as a special teams assistant and became Seattle’s secondary coach from 2017-19.
