LG Mike Iupati retires after 11 seasons
Veteran left guard Mike Iupati is retiring from the NFL.
“My body was telling me it was time to close the door,” the 33-year-old told The Spokesman Review in Spokane, Wash.
Iupati spent 11 seasons in the NFL, all in the NFC West. The San Francisco 49ers selected the Idaho product in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He played five seasons with the 49ers, earning three Pro Bowl berths and an All-Pro selection in 2012.
He signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015 and made his fourth Pro Bowl team, then spent the past two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.
Durability became an issue in the latter part of his career. In the first game of the 2017 season, he suffered a triceps injury and missed the rest of the season. In 2018, he started 10 games, missing time with a back injury and then a season-ending MCL injury.
In 2020, a recurring neck injury limited him to 10 games.
In all, Iupati played in 140 games, starting all but one.
