Lions activate likely starter Stafford from COVID-19 list

The Detroit Lions activated quarterback Matthew Stafford from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday with the intention of starting him in Sunday’s contest against the Minnesota Vikings.

Stafford still must past one more round of tests on Sunday morning, NFL Network reported. He was slated to travel to Minneapolis by private plane.

Stafford was placed on the COVID-19 list Wednesday after what was determined to be high-risk close contact of a non-team member who tested positive.

While Stafford wasn’t involved in the physical preparations for Sunday’s game, he was heavily involved in Zoom meetings all week and made suggestions in terms of the game plan.

Chase Daniel took the first-team practice repetitions and he indicated all week long that he expected Stafford would be the starter.

“He’s in everything that we do,” Daniel said. “In our walk-through (Friday), it’s crazy what technology can do these days, and we’re having a good time with it and he’s making the adjustments and changes on the run, so it’s been a good week.”

Lions coach Matt Patricia said earlier in the week that Stafford wouldn’t need to practice in order to play.

The 12-year-veteran has completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,916 yards and 13 touchdowns with five interceptions this season.

Detroit also placed cornerback Darryl Roberts (hip/groin) on injured reserve and activated defensive end Austin Bryant from the physically unable to perform list. Starting guard Joe Dahl (back) was ruled out of the contest on Saturday and offensive lineman Marcus Martin was promoted from the practice squad.
