McCaffrey limited with new injury ahead of expected return
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is dealing with a new injury that limited him in practice Wednesday, days ahead of his expected return from a shoulder injury.
Carolina coach Matt Rhule said McCaffrey tweaked his quad while working out last week — a bye week for the team — and that it tightened up on him, making him limited for Wednesday’s practice.
“It sounded like it was part of his working out and his training,” Rhule said.
McCaffrey has had a dreadful go of it physically this season, with two injuries limiting the All-Pro RB to three games played.
An ankle injury suffered in Week 2 against Tampa Bay knocked McCaffrey out of seven games, only to suffer a shoulder injury on the final drive in the Panthers’ Week 9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in his first game back.
He has missed the past three games with the shoulder and was on track to return Sunday against the Denver Broncos, saying earlier this week that his shoulder feels great.
McCaffrey has 225 yards rushing with five touchdowns to go with 17 catches for 149 yards and another score in three games.
The Panthers returned to practice Wednesday after shutting down their facility for two days due to eight players being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
