Panthers restructure RB Christian McCaffrey’s contract
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey and linebacker Shaq Thompson restructured their contracts to create cap space, head coach Matt Rhule said Wednesday.
The Panthers were not over the new cap figure of $182.5 million but restructured the deals after using the franchise tag to retain right tackle Taylor Moton on Tuesday.
McCaffrey converted $7,047,500 of his $8,037,500 base salary into a signing bonus, NFL Network reported. That move gives the Panthers a cap savings in 2021 of $5.638 million.
Thompson, according to reports, also lowered his base salary to the veteran’s minimum of $990,000, the same adjustment the team used with McCaffrey.
McCaffrey signed a huge deal last April, inking a four-year, $64 million contract that included a $21.5 million signing bonus and $38.16 million guaranteed.
Thompson has three years remaining on the four-year, $54.433 million deal and his cap figure for the Panthers drops by more than $4 million.
